Description

Mattathias Antigonus II, the last of the Hasmoneans, was crowned in the year 40 BCE, the same year the Romans declared Herod I to be ruler of Judea. After three years of fighting, Antigonus was captured and killed. His death and Herod the Great’s ascension over Judaea paved the way for the events of the New Testament.
