The Parthian Empire (247 BCE - 224 CE) dominated much of the middle east from its homeland in Persia. Its rulers were the styled as ‘King of Kings’ and were culturally and politically the true heirs to the Achaemenid Empire of Cyrus the Great. It’s founder Arsaces was the chief of a nomadic tribe who rebelled against their Greek Seleucid masters building an empire that would become a major rival to Rome. The Parthians were skilled horseman employing heavy cavalry and deadly mounted archers. Overtime, they rejected their adopted Greek culture and moved towards their native Persian roots.
