John Casimir’s reign was one of the most disastrous in the history of Poland, marked by heavy losses of Polish territory incurred in wars against the Ukrainians, Tatars, Swedes, and Russians. He ultimately died in France in 1672, as an exile, having abdicated the throne in 1668. He was the last Polish ruler of the House of Vasa and the last king of Poland with a blood connection to the famous Jagiellon dynasty.
