The Ilkhans were originally a Mongol people who established a Khanate across much of the Middle East and became progressively more Islamized. Their conversion to Islam from Buddhism in 1295 CE was an event lamented by European Christians, who had unrealistically hope that they would become Christians instead. The rudiments of double-entry accounting were practiced in the Ilkhanate and from there spread to the Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe.
