Pondicherry was first established by the French East India Company in 1674 and went on to become the capital of French India. The French managed to retain this outpost, despite losing it to the Dutch in 1693 and British in 1761 and 1793, even after British India became independent in 1947. It was only in 1962 that this French enclave became fully integrated into the Republic of India.
