Nicholas II (b. 1868) was the last of the Romanov line. His nickname was Bloody Nicholas, a moniker earned from his vicious response to the peaceful protests outside the Winter Place in 1905—the notorious Bloody Sunday massacre—and his fondness for anti-Jewish pogroms and political assassination. His bumbling military leadership resulted in a humiliating defeat in the Russo-Japanese War and some 3.3 million Russian casualties in the Great War. He abdicated the throne in 1917 and was executed by the Bolsheviks on July 16, 1918, along with his wife and all five of his children. On that tragic day, the Romanov Dynasty died. This set featutes a postage stamp, as well as a copper 1 and 3 kopek, and silver 10 and 20 kopek, of the Last Romanov.
