Description

In 1861, Victor Emmanuel II, the King of Sardinia, assumed the title King of Italy, which he held until his death in 1878. Allying himself with Napoleon III of France, the king pushed for Italian unification. Lombardy was liberated from Austrian rule, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies fell to Garibaldi in 1861, and Victor Emmanuel marched victoriously in the Marche and Umbria after defeating the Papal forces. Veneto was annexed in 1866, and the king entered Rome in 1870 after conquering the Papal States, thus uniting all of Italy. He set up his capital there in 1871, reigning for seven more years until his death in 1878. He is buried in the Pantheon. This is a 10 centesimi struck during his reign.
