The Byzantine empire rose like a phoenix out of the crumbling remains of the old Roman empire, with its new capital in Constantinople (Istanbul) and its roots in the well-established Greek urban culture of the Mediterranean. The energetic and visionary emperors of this period helped to stave off the barbarians on the frontiers and to continue and build a cohesive Christian state with an effective civil service and military, that would go on to last for almost another nine hundred years.
