In 1626 the Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan introduced a new cast copper coin known as the Kanei Tsuho. It replaced a mixture of Chinese coins and privately minted coins that were in circulation and was the first coin to be issued by the government in 700 years. These coins would become the daily currency of the common people and would be used for small payments. These coins were minted for 230 years, continuing to stay the main coin circulating in Japan, even though the Kan’ei era ended in 1643.
