The urban civilized world of the Ancient Greece was bordered in the northern and central Balkans by Celtic tribes and kingdoms. These Celtic warrior caste cultures provided a constant source of mercenary troops for the rival rulers of Greece engaged in dynastic strugglers. However, periodically, as in 279 BCE, they would go feral and mount raids down into Greece looking for plunder and slaves, even sacking the sacred sanctuary of Delphi on this occasion.
